CHAPTER 14

NOVA

Dad’s house—the familiar scent, the grooves in the hardwood floors my feet know by memory, the full-bodied glass of red wine in hand—wraps around me like a hug. It feels good to be home and even better to have all my favorite guys under the same roof.

I grin as Gabe says something that makes Dad laugh in the kitchen.

“I’ll take that,” West whispers, plucking the glass from my hand and taking a sip. “What are you going to do? Carry it around the entire time.”

“I was looking for a place to leave it,” I hiss back, taking it from his hand and placing it on an end table in the living room where it’s hidden behind a lamp.

West snorts, I grin, and we share a secret look.

He places a hand on my lower back, and I lean into it. God, I’ve missed him. I’ve missed this. The familiarity, the trust, the contentment of just being in the same space together, drawing in the same breaths. It’s like we’re back. The two of us, lost in our own world, a hidden universe no one else knows about. “How do you feel?” he murmurs, a line puckering between his brows.

“Good,” I reply. “I feel really good today.”

Relief colors his eyes. “Good. You ready to tell them?”

I nod. “I’m ready.” And I am. With West by my side, I feel stronger. More stable. More equipped to grow into a mother and birth a baby.

It’s not that our months apart are forgotten, it’s more that I know what it’s like to be without him. And I don’t want to be anymore. In fact, I never wanted that.

While it’s clear that my pregnancy brought us back together, West was right. We’re the ones who choose to make this work. And now, we both know exactly what’s at stake. What we would lose. Because we’ve already lived it.

“Stop canoodling in the living room and get in here,” Jacques calls out, gesturing for West and me to enter the kitchen. His arm is wrapped around the woman he’s been dating—for two whole months now—named Haley.

“Like you’re one to talk.” I point at him.

Haley blushes and Jacques shakes his head, giving me a warning look. “I’m in the kitchen with the rest of our family,” he tosses back.

I stick my tongue out at him.

“You’re just salty because you learned about Haley from West,” Gabe says.

Haley blushes a deeper shade of red.

“Facts,” West agrees, pounding fists with Gabe.

I roll my eyes and give Haley a genuine smile to make her feel better. This has nothing to do with her and everything to do with my brother who didn’t even tell me he was dating!

West laces his fingers with mine and gives two quick squeezes to get my mind back on track. Moving deeper into the kitchen, I tuck our joined hands behind my back. “West and I have news.”

Jacques and Gabe exchange a look. Haley looks on expectantly. Dad tries to hide his smile.

“Really?” Dad asks, crossing his arms.
